  Oral history interview with Jan Lorey Jandayran

  Jan Lorey Jandayran is a senior history major who transferred to Stony Brook in fall 2019. In this interview he describes the days leading up to the closing of campus, including the challenges of communication among students, faculty, and administration. He describes the difficulties of coordinating online learning at home, the impact COVID had on his job, and navigating dating during the pandemic.

  Oral history interview with Giulieta Stoianov

  Giulieta Stoianov is the Head of Access and User Services (AUS) at Stony Brook University Libraries and during the early months of the COVID pandemic, she oversaw many main AUS responsibilities while the director was on sabbatical. In this interview, Giulieta discusses the changes that COVID brought to circulation and other public services, and the ways that the staff interacted during home isolation and while the library kept locations open for those remaining students on campus. Giulieta also talks about her contact with family in Europe when the pandemic first broke and her experiences as a contact tracer for New York State.

  Healthcare Hero: Damaris Torres, Nursing Department

  One day, in the height of the first wave of the pandemic, I prayed to God in the hospital parking lot. I asked him to come to us and to help us. I then proceeded to walk into work and turned to my patients and colleagues and said, “Today, we are celebrating life! We need to be happy for today!” My job is to help patients with whatever they need. Taking their vitals, drawing blood. But everything changed when COVID hit. Patient needs changed. And the way I connected with patients changed. We always do everything we can to brighten their days and provide them with love, hope, and the best medical care possible. But there is just something about this pandemic that opened our eyes and made us look differently at the way we provide care. And for me, personally, it made me realize just how important it is for everybody to remain in good spirits, especially when it’s really hard to do so. I don’t think we should fear this virus. But we do need to respect it. We need to accept that this is our reality right now and adapt. We need to do what we can to protect ourselves and others.

  Oral history interview with Marie Turchiano

  Marie Turchiano is Director of Recreation and Wellness at Stony Brook University. In this interview she discusses the activities of her department during the pandemic, their adaptation of activities to the online environment, and how they worked to engage students. She also relates how COVID affected communications within the office and how it affected her life outside of Stony Brook.

  Dave Ecker is the Director of iCreate at Stony Brook University. In this interview, he discusses the activities of iCreate during the pandemic, particularly their effort to design and mass-produce face shields for the Stony Brook University Hospital. He describes his collaboration with local public libraries as well as the impact of the pandemic on the operations of iCreate, on the students he works with, and on his home life.

  Valentina Marzulli is a psychology major and was a sophomore and on-campus resident at the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this interview, she describes her experiences in Langmuir Hall as students were ordered to leave. She also discusses her life at home in Queens during isolation, the transition to all-online classes, and how she kept in contact with her friends and the university.
