  Dr. Ken Kaushansky was the senior vice president for the health sciences at Stony Brook University and dean of the School of Medicine. In this second of two interviews, he discusses how the University Hospital addressed its space and equipment needs during COVID, the changes in the number of patients, and the psychological stressors everyone experienced. He also comments on the construction of the field hospitals on the main campus and on the later days of the pandemic in Suffolk County.

In this first of two interviews, he discusses the University Hospital’s initial responses to COVID, including the early graduation of fourth-year medical students and the reassignment of surgical residents to intensive care. He also relates the challenges of acquiring supplies, the coordination and information sharing among regional hospitals and associations, and the importance of Stony Brook’s own research into treating patients with the disease.
