Lawrence “Larry” Zacarese is the Interim Chief of Police and Assistant Vice President for Campus Safety and the Senior Operations Director for Institutional Resiliency and Business Continuity. In this interview he discusses the steps taken to address COVID-19 at Stony Brook in early spring of 2020, including the isolation of SUNY study abroad students at the Southampton campus and working with local, state and federal agencies, particularly on the establishment of a field hospital on West Campus. He also describes his experience in the emergency management field and how that informed his reactions to the pandemic.
