The materials connected to restorative care-- handpieces and filling material-- represent a desire to repair and maintain teeth, rather than to extract them. This establishment of a middle ground between pulling carious teeth and leaving them in the mouth to deteriorate is an important component of modern dental practice, and one that is well documented in the material culture of dentistry (Bennion, 1986).
