DONORS

This exhibit was made possible by the generosity of our donors and their willingness to share their collections of texts, objects, and images related to the history of dentistry.  We are grateful to the family of Dr. R. Sherman Mills for allowing us to exhibit his rich collection of dental instruments, including some very evocative extraction and surgical equipment from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.  Dr. Allan J. Kucine, DDS, of the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, enriched the exhibit by loaning his collection of mid-century hand tools, as well as other historical objects.  Dr. Kucine also provided invaluable advice and support during the creation of the digital exhibit.  The collection of Dr. Baer, formerly of the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, was donated by his family to the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine, and its dental trade cards and dental pot lids provide important historical, cultural, and aesthetic dimensions to the exhibit.  Dr. Philias Garant, DDS, Professor Emeritus at the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, donated a copy of his book on the history of dentistry, The long climb: From barber-surgeons to doctors of dental surgery.  Finally, we are grateful to the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine for offering modern dental instruments and oral hygiene supplies to be used as counterparts to the historical objects.  The combination of these collections and the graciousness of their donors allowed for the creation of a historically valuable, culturally relevant exhibit for which we are truly grateful.
