Deer Harold:

is always true. we have most need of e lawyer when he is
on vacation. I hope that you have enjoyed yours. I would
be most grateful if you could tell no prior to the board
meeting, at there are e number at problems which require
clerifieetion.

'

I believe that we should go ahead with the program of on»
lerging the board, even though the illness of Mr. Bethe will
prevent the innediete enlargement. Bovevet. if the notion
of the board at this meeting will handicap ite action because
will enletge the unober oeoeeeery for e quorum, nerhepe we
it
should defer thin action until we ere reasonably note that we
have condidetee to fill the additional positions.
We

hove had no odditiooel information from Mt. Trigg.

At the

present time, George is noting on if the reletionehip to the
State will continue in on independent feehion; howeVer, he
has been very actively involved with the University of Mieeooti
end in trying to eetehlieh e relationship with that university.
since our attempts at relating to Washington University have
failed. There in none possibility thet if we relate to the
University of Hieeonri. the position of the Foundation would
have to be reviewed.

Theee ere, however, not the problem: which face we at the
moment. I have e problem with Monsanto Chemical with regerd
to out one of eons of their compounds in eXpetioeotel studies
which we would like tomoderteke. I have written to then to
obtain their support in providing on with the new materials

necessary for this Study.

I have slso mode so inquiry regarding the feasibility of s
formal ststeosnt from honssnto Cheeicel to the Fonndstion,

regsrding the contingency that these new conroonds may be
highly successful in the treatment of the mentally ill.
It so, I would like to be sure that ell financial benefits
do not sccrue to the private corporation clone. Most'of
the funds used to study these compounds will cone both from
the Stete of hissouri end the National Institute of Mental
Health. I have been siogclsrly unsuccessful in obtsining
their help. even to discuss the question of a formal relation~
ship between the chemical company and the Yoondetion (Institute).
I would be grateful for e few minutes of your time to discuss
this problem end. if necessary. to bring it up before the bosrd
at its meeting on the 13th.‘
‘

second problem is not related to the meeting; but has become
urgent heceuse of some actions in the Institute. Last summer.
we were critically short of en EEG technicien. we advertised
in St. Louis and lot it be known throughout the state that we
would like to employ a technician. None were available. 1

work with us. She indicated thst she was unsble to sccept any

final notification thst the immigration authorities would not

is en excellent technicisn. She is shle to work on a 60:
end hes usintsined her schooling very well. If I celeulste
the suns owed her to dete, it is epproxiaetoly $2,000. I do not
know if it is worth another effort. but I an aware that en inquiry
from an attorney cerriss considerable weight with cost lower
echelon sdcinistretive people. I should like to discuss this
problem with you, and set your advice as to whether we should or
should not attempt to obtsin e change in ruling so that we can
continue to obtain the services of this excellent worker.
