Kline Institute for Psychiatric Research. I knew Nate Kline well, and it was his pioneering studies of antidepressant drugs that led to our present psychopharmacologic revolution in the care of the severe mentally ill. He was an important asset to the mentally ill of the State, with many creative and novel innovations which served our patients and fellow citizens very well. Institute that carries his name has continued his and I am writing to encourage you to restore the funding of this Institute. It is only through clinical research, of the kind being done at the Institute, that we can ever hope to improve the lot of the thousands of severe mentally ill that populate our State hospitals. The excellent work, I was involved in the closing of the Long Island Research Institute in 1983. That closing resulted not only in the loss of the research studies, but in a decline in the services to the patients at Pilgrim State, Kings Park, and Central Islip Psychiatric Centers. never recovered.
