Kane, MD. for membership in the CINP. John is now the Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at the Long Island Jewish-Hillside Hospital Medical Center. am very well acquainted with his work from his training with Donald Klein (1975-77), his leadership of the Research Department of Hillside Hospital (1977-1987), and his active membership in our Department of Psychiatry at Stony Brook (1977-1989). I I John is a dedicated clinical and theoretic researcher with special interests schizophrenia, antipsychotic drugs, and tardive dyskinesia. His studies of the relative efficacy and safety of high and low dose fluphenazine provide the best data on dosage, efficacy, and safety of antipsychotic drugs. These studies led to prospective studies of the incidence of tardive dyskinesia, and here again, his studies provide the most substantive data on the incidence of TD, and the risks associated with dosing, time of exposure, age, gender, and diagnosis. With Herb Meltzer, he is a principal investigator of the efficacy and safety of clozapine in therapy resistant psychotic patients and is credited with convincing the FDA to re-introduce clozapine in clinical practice. Finally, he is the principal investigator of an NlMH clinical schizophrenia research center, which is carrying out useful clinical and laboratory studies of a well studied cohort of schizophrenic patients. in He became a full professor at SUNY at Stony Brook in 1985, an honor that is sought by many and achieved by few. John is a fine clinician and able administrator. His publication record is excellent and his standards are the highest. His promotion to chairmanship provides him with one of the best clinical services for research and am confident that he will continue to make important contributions to biological research. He is a consultant and leader at the NlMH, ACNP, and the American Psychiatric Association. I commend him for membership in the ClNP with much enthusiasm and without reservations. I My best regards.
