I have known Harold for about a decade, first meeting him when he in academic research in the neuropsychology of perception. He interest expressed an used ECT as a way to modify brain function, and did so intelligently. He joined Sidney Malitz at the New York State Psychiatric Institute where he developed the nation’s strongest research program in ECT. We have worked together on the APA Task Force on Electroconvulsive Therapy and on the editorial board of CONVULSIVE THERAPY. Harold is an outstanding neuropsychologist, a direct descendent (conceptually speaking) of Joseph Zubin, Richard Wittenborn, Conan Kornetsky, and other SOphisticated psychologists who did so much to make the ACNP a scientific organization with holistic interests. Harold has a detailed knowledge of neuropsychology and electrophysiology. He is an expert in perception, memory function, anti-amnesic drugs, cerebral physiology (cerebral blood flow and SPECT, to be specific), statistics, and the psychopathology of affective disorders. He first came to the attention of the research community in his innovative studies of the role of facial asymmetry in the manifestation and perception of expressed emotion. He has made important contributions to our knowledge in ECT; specifically, in the role of the stimulus in treatment response, and on the physiologic and memory effects of different dosages and electrode placements. The ongoing studies of cerebral blood flow and SPECT are promising to add more information on its mechanism of action. His clinical skills in interviewing and diagnosis are excellent.
