Larry Koran, M.D.
Department of Psychiatry
Stanford University Medical Center
Stanford, CA 94305

1!

‘

Dear Larry,

it was kind of you to write and to give me the news of your work. I enjoyed
much.
it very
I continue on service on the inpatient unit at University Hospital six
months a year with two residents and two medical students during their rotations;
run the ECT service (which is flourishing); and do some research in EEG, as before.
My main work is in editing CONVULSIVE THERAPY, a challenge which 1 accepted
in 1984 and which has kept me busy since.

Our Department has changed markedly under Fritz Henn. We are a
neuroscience center, with good relationships with the V.A. and with the State
services. So much so, that we are planning a new 250 bed psychiatric research
hospital adjoining University Hospital. Planning and architectural drawing funds
have been approved. I have put in my bid to run a neuropsychiatry unit when that
center opens, but we will surely have a large medical/surgical psychiatric unit, as
well as research units for dementia, schizophrenia, and affective disorders.
Meanwhile, Mort Miller‘s successor, Tom Craig left to head a unit in New
and
we are seeking a new Director for the CPD programs. Do you have an
Jersey,
interest to get back into academic research? The position would be good if you

were interested.

Thank you again for your kind words and the reminder that sometimes good
deeds are rewarded in one's lifetime.
My best regards.

Sincerely yours,

Max Fink, M.D.

Professor of Psychiatry
