Ms. Michelle Trudeau

c/o Steve Potkin, MD.

Department of Psychiatry
UCIMC

City Drive 5., Route 88
Orange, CA 92668

Dear Ms. Trudeau,
We treat ECT patients at University Hospital on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday mornings at 0800. You may wish to come the afternoon before and meet the
patients and their relatives (visiting hours are from 2 to 4 p.m.). Patients are
usually cooperative for interviews. We recently entertained the BBC/PBS crew for
the series “MIND", and they filmed patient interviews and treatment sequenceswith patient and family consent, of course.

The campus is 55 miles from mid-Manhattan, due east on Long Island. It is
best to come into Long Island MacArthur (lslip) airport, if that is feasible; it is a
short taxi ride to our community. If you come to JFK or LAG, Winston Limousine
service (800 942 l+222) or Colonial Taxi (800 832 7878) generally give the best flat
rate service to our area. It you plan to stay over, the best accommodations are at
the Three Village Inn (516 751 0555) in Stony" Brook. There is one *** restaurant in
our village (Mirabelle).
The next issue of CONVULSIVE THERAPY is celebrating the 50th
anniversary of the introduction of ECT. Among the articles is a translation of the
eye-witness account of the first ECT treatments by Ferdinando Accornero, an
active participant in the research studies at the University of Rome. The article
was published in Italian in 1950; I have had it translated and I enclose a copy of the
proof. (The account is verified by another participant in the research in Rome,
Lothar Kalinowsky of New York.)
I

look forward to your visit to Stony Brook. My regards.
Sincerely yours,

Max Fink, M.D.

Professor of Psychiatry
