Dear Dr. Regier,

l

Dr. Shervert Frazier suggested that I visit with you the next time lam in
Washington with regard to ongoing programs of research into convulsive therapy at
NIMH. l was enquiring as to any follow-up 01 the recommendations of the NIH
sponsored Consensus Conference on Electroconvulsive Therapy held in June, 1985.

Dr. Frazier indicated that any efforts in any special direction at NlMH
required educated and dedicated manpower, willing and able to maneuver through
the administrative thickets of the present administration. I recently undertook the
launching of the new journal CONVULSIVE THERAPY, published by Raven Press,
and i believe that my plate is quite full. However, i am eligible for a University
sabbatical in 1987 or 1988, and if there is a mechanism whereby a program in ECT
could be encouraged, I would like to consider it.

shall be in Washington for the Society of Biological Psychiatry and APA
meetings in May. My calendar is free on Monday morning, May 12 until i p.m. if
you will be at the sessions that morning, or are free for lunch, I would be pleased to
meet you. I could also come to Bethesda if that suits you better.
