The meetings in New York last month were quite good, and I learned much, and enjoyed meeting our friends from the Midwest and the West. I look forward to the 1987 meetings as well. One issue prompts this letter, and it is to suggest that subscription to the journal be part of each member‘s participation and included in the annual dues. COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHIATRY was founded by. Fritz Freyhan, and in its early days, it was clearly a preferred vehicle for novel contributions by members of the Association. It became the official organ of the Association, and sought to publish information about the members and the programs. It was also the practice, beginning under the leadership of Paul Hoch and Joe Zubin, to publish the proceedings as an annual monograph. On a number of occasions, the Council considered subscription to the annual volumes, as well as to the journal, as part of the annual dues and membership. But such costs would not be bourne by the members, especially since the annual volumes were priced at varying levels by the different publishers. It seems to me that subscription to the journal usually failed of support because of the junction of the two issues. Perhaps it is time to again address the journal subscription as a membership feature of the annual dues, separate from other issues. No scientific journal is able to survive on advertising alone, and it must depend on its readers for support. If we wish to continue to support COMPREHENSIVE PSYCHIATRY as a vehicle of the APPA, perhaps the membership should be polled as to its willingness to subscribe, probably at a preferred rate, as part of the annual dues?
