As before, I enjoyed your review. I have little faith in the present biochemical or animal models of mental disorders, but they seem necessary steps in our learning. Both Horrobin and Ackernecht reflected my appreciation of the problems. I had already cut out your note in Lancet on "Holy Dread" which found delightful. I also you will see from the letterhead, I have succumbed to temptation and the invitation of the publisher of Raven Press, Alan Edelson, to edit a accepted journal CONVULSIVE THERAPY, which is a quarterly, with the first issue to appear in March. While most of the space will be dedicated to refereed research reports, there is room for innovation. ECT has just passed its 5lst birthday, and its very persistence is a challenge to our understanding. For almost three decades, research interest lagged, but lately there has been a re-awakening. In 1978, Timothy Crow challenged the belief that a seizure was necessary to the outcome and thereby launched six or more studies in Britain. While most observers now accept that either the seizure or something accompanying the seizure is necessary for maximal antidepressant effects, Tim still believes that good nursing care will do as well. There are other beliefs which are as contested, not the least of which is the range of theories of the antidepressant efficacy of ECT. The two principal (‘serious') theories are those of Grahame-Smith, Costain, Green, and Modigh on the neurohumoral theory; and Ottosson and myself on the neuroendocrine. As. I do not know how much experience you have with the ECT process, nor whether it is a feature of your University landscape. But should you wish to tackle the ECT beliefs, consider a contribution to this new journal. My best regards.
