The tan is fading rapidly, and despite my best efforts to tell my co-workers that it came from sitting too close to the slide projectors, they are not persuaded. . A reprint from our experience with fenfluramine is enclosed. The work was initially done at the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry in 1964-65, and replicated in 1965—66. 1 hesitated publishing it, until we had some clinical experience (open trials in obese subjects seeking a weight reduction regime) and had confirmed the compound's sedative qualities. it was this study that convinced us that the pharmaco—EEG model had merit in man, yielding information that was independent of animal trials, more relevant and reliable with regard to clinical projections and experience. It is this model that has been so useful in defining the clinical profiles of doxepin, mianserin, flutroline, and some antihistaminics, antihypertensives, and hormonal agents with greater accuracy and reliability than the animal pharmacology. This model is well accepted in EurOpe, where many of the large pharmaceutical companies have 'in-house' pharmaco-EEG laboratories; and where numerous 'contract-laboratories' do the work for the smaller firms. The Europeans have founded an "International Pharmaco-EEG Group" which now holds biennial meetings (similar to the CINP). in this country, only Turan ltil at the New York Medical College and I are active researchers in this field. If you are interested in obtaining a more accurate appraisal of enantiomers or congeners of fenfluramine, the pharmaco-EEG model can yield useful projections as to a compound's CNS activity, its classification, dose-response range, and behavioral effects.
