As best as I recall the Hinckley affair, he was acquitted of attempted murder by reason of insanity, on the advice of a number of defense witnesses, among whom was William Carpenter. My only connection with the affair was through reading the New York Times. A search for reports of the Hinckley trial in the New York Times index for 1981-1982 should give the articles which describe the testimony. And, thank you for your invitation. come to England.
