Dear Gabriele,
Following our telephone discussions last week, we have begun a crossover
of
the EEG and behavioral effects of l—penbutolol at 100 mg and placebo in
study
12 normal male volunteers, following the specifications of the protocol dated
October 6, 1982, which we sent you on October 15. The data collection will require
about eight weeks; but because of the year-end holidays, these may not be
completed until January and the data analyses by late February.

enclose a draft of the sum mary report of our dose-ranging studies with _l_penbutolol. These data provide the basis for our recommendation for a placebo
controlled trial at 100 mg.
I

This assessment required 15 sessions, and I enclose a statement of our
reimbursable expenses in the amount of $3,630. Would please request a check be
sent us ?
For the placebo-crossover study, using the same budgetary allowances
(February 13, 1982) of $20/hour for experiments and $60/hour for computer time, I
suggest an allowance of $4,240.
My

best regards.
Sincerely yours,
Max Fink, M.D.

Dear Gabriele,
The penbutolol study report is now typed, lacking only the artist's
drawings for the draft to be sent to you. The EEG profile is clearly most similar to
that which we elicited for clonidine. We expect the figures to be ready by
February 4, and I will send a copy promptly.

have made reservations to fly from Tel Aviv on Sunday evening,
February 20, on Luithansa605 arriving in Frankfurt at 1950. I also have reserved a
flight to Amsterdam on Tuesday afternoon, February 22 at 1445 on KLM 21m.
I

Thank you for your and Dr. Grigoleit‘s letter of January 17. I shall
continue to do whatever I can to assist you in your studies and in developing the
pharmaco-EEG program at Hoechst. Reimbursement for services rendered are
acceptable, although probably more expensive for you than on a consulting basis.
Reimbursement for the direct costs of studies (volunteer fees, technicians, gig.)
and for travel are billed as expended. The consultation fee for the design and
implementation of a pharmaco-EEG study is $5,000. Hourly charges vary with locus
in New York, $100 and abroad, $150, with a daily basis of $800 in New York and
$1,200 abroad.

I

trust this is acceptable.

My

best regards.
Sincerely yours,
Max Fink, MD.
