Yolles, M.D. Professor and Chairman Department of Psychiatry Health Sciences Center SUNY at Stony Brook Stony Brook, NY 11790 Dear Stan, I have known of Leon Hankoff since the early 1960's when he was a research associate of David Engelhardt and Norbert Freedman and published articles in Psychopharmacology. After that research period, I he assumed more administrative roles. Our first working association began last year, when he joined the Stony Brook faculty to enhance ' the clinical services of the Department. Since coming to Stony Brook, he has organized the clinical services and is responsible for their continued management. In this service, we have gained from his experience. His principal interest is in psychiatric history and he is studying both the phenomenon of suicide and the interrelations of religion and mental illness. I am unable to assess this scholarship or his teaching ability since I have had no occasion to review or observe either. Despite the demands of the clinical service, he has continued his studies and has published an interesting book on suicide. I have often participated with him on committies of the Department, and recall that he is usually with the majority. In personality, he is friendly, out—going, and soft spoken. He is a am encouraged to recommend the dedicated member of the Department, and I renewal of his term appointment.
