Dr. May's outstanding contribution has been a study of the treatment of the severe mentally ill by drugs, milieu and ECT. This work clearly demonstrated the efficacy and safety of drug therapy in those patients. Surprisingly. the efficacy of ECT was also demonstrated and in this regard, the reports are among the more important in the literature. For this contribution, he was awarded the Paul Book Award of the American Psychopathologicnl Association. His breadth of intsreat is seen in his writings in such topics as statistics, prediction of treatncnt response, paychologicll teats, rehabilitation, mantel health care delivery and nursing. He has also written on natural history topics, particularly in the habits of woodpeckers. In addition to his teaching of residents in training and modical students, Dr. Mhy is an authority on the treatment of schizophrenia and has preparcd cassette tapes for post graduate education on this topic. He has served as President of the Amcrican College of serving that socioty wall for a number of years.
