Hospital Fareham, Hants , England Gill, Dear Drs. Inmbourn and I have read your interesting report comparing simulated and in the latest issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry. As you know, the findings seem contrary to the studies which we and Ulett gg_al. published in the 1950's. A principal difference in the studies is the use of different electrode placements to induce seizures. It is possible that this difference may explain the findings. real ECT The procedure notes that "Those in the active group received a brief pulse stimulus of approximately a bilateral seizure to produce a How the seizures 10 Joules. bilateral modified convulsion on was the seizure monitored . . . This was noted every occasion." ? How was this assurance of documented ? What was the average duration of so induced ? And, was there a measure of total seiture time for each patient ? Another way to these data may be in the interseizure measurements. Were any measures of brain function, as EEG or psychological tests, done before and after 6 treatments, or after the final series I would be grateful for any additional data to help explain the unusual findings of this study.
