Robert Wallerstein, M.D.
Chairman, Department of Psychiatry
Langley Porter Neuropsychiatric Institute
u01 Parnassus Avenue
San

Francisco, California 9u1u3

Dear Bob,
mm pleased to submit this letter of reference on
Dr. Lorrin Koran whom I have known since the summer of
1972 when he joined the faculty of Stony Brook. During these
four and a half years, I have known him as a fellow teacher,
committee member, and co-worker on a number of proéects.

behalf of

I

For the past two years, I have urged Larry to undertake

research studies in

my Diviiion. His decision to return to
California is a keen disappointment to me, for I have found him
to be one of the brightest and thoughtful young men in the

some

Department.

He is a fine teacher. He accepted responsibility to
the
develop
Psychobiology systemsteaching program. He prganized
the staff well, and attended all the sessions during the first
year. The students were treated to a mentor-student relationship
that is rarely seen, and the students were keenly responsive
to his interest. The same can be said for the daculty-- I do
not think that I have been called upon to work as hard, nor to
satisfy as high standards, as in participating in this course.
During the past year, he repeated the effort, and his leaving the
Department will leave a void that will be difficult to fill.
He

is

He

is personable, reliable,

an innovative thinker. He has developed some
ideas
as to the biochemical basis of schizophrenia-—
interesting
ideas that are quite consonant with the type of work that is
ongoing at the Institute.

faculty, staff,

highly.

and

and well liked by the
miss
I
him, and commend
will
students.

Sincerely yours,
Fink, M.D.
