Department of Psychology Washington University St. Louis. Mo. 3w- Dear John: for lunch. On Thursday I was able to visit Ierjenorry to see how quiet and how empty the laboratories were. The few girls who are left are quite depressed and it is a tragedy that the leadership was unable to keep this fine Institution going. Thank you very much the institute and was I learned one fact,which should have been brought to the attention of the public in 1962. When the Institute opened, there were more than 2500 patients at the St. Louis State Hospital. The Chief Nurse tells me now that their census is down to less than 500 patients, and that to fill the empty halls, they have moved aged and mentally defective patients into the Institution. Sheltif the public should have been told that much of that reduction, which far exceeds the reductions in New York State with which I am now acquainted, was the response to greater care more physicians, etc. I was puzzled as to where I got my erroneous dates for SPR. Please note the enclosed which led me to mark my calendar. I also am sending you the only other communication I received which makes no mention of a change of date. My best regards.
