The senior faculty consists of myself, Joseph wortis, M.D., and Harvey Karten, M.D. Other scientists contributing or collaborating with our work are Bernard Tursky (Political Science), David Krikorian (Botany), The yet so new and Michael Gazsaniga (Psychology), to ‘ .. name a few. work is in two directions—~ the measurement of electrical signals from the scalp of man using digital computer methods and correlating these changes with dose, type, and duration of action of psychoactive substances, both therapeutic and those of abuse; and a clinical study program evaluating the efficacy and safety of new treatments for menttl illness under grants and contracts with NIMH and NIDA. Dr. Whrtis is a specialist in developmental psychology and the editor of Biological Psychiatry. Dr. Karten is a neuroanattmist Most of my tracing pathways in the brains of pigeons. Mr. Tursky is a psychophysiologist who is measuring bodily functions as predictors a! attitudes and voting behavior. Prof. Krikorian is interested in the botany of khat, another of the substances of presumed abuse, used in East Africa, and which may be the subject of studies of its neurophysiology and psychological effects. Prof. Gasssniga is known for his studies of the split brain, and these issues continue to excite him and the students. My laboratory consists of the usual neurophysiology Hiinstruments and an IBM 1800 computer for the analyses. We recording spend much time with studies in volunteers, and usually have 2~3 fellows in residence. Should you visit the campus, you may wish to visit the laboratonies.
