VAR

Northport

In your discussions with the faculty of the Department of
Psychiatry some weak: ago, you highlighted the importance of
the facilities at VAR Northport and our rolationohip to that
hospital for the dovolopmoot of this school.
The following capsular history may be holpful in your
tiouing negotiations with that institution.

In tho spring of 1972, Dr. Yolles and I obtained support
from the VA Control Offioo for the catnblishmont of a drug do~
pondonoo treatment center. Like Venus rising from the sea, the
unit was established on July 1, 1972. By October, 1972, the
ward was staffed; mothadono maintenanoo. narcotic antagonists,
and detoxification for opiate dependence wore all provided by
a staff that had been wall trained; and additional funds had
been awarded by NINE for those programs.
By

tho tumour of 1973. Hard 663 had boon renovated and a

fine facility established.

'

During that same cannot. we notod that the number of opiatedcpondont subjects in the community had boon reduced (part of a
national phonomonon), and we discussed with Dr. LoCerva the cd~
mission of patients with alcoholism in that unit. Approval was
granted, and since September 1973, we have run a census of 75%
alcohol abuso pationto and 25% opiate-dopcndont.

This program has continued to develop until Wednesday,
February 27, when Dr. Briasondon and I wore peromptorily noti—
fied by the new modicnl director that the funding for this unit
would terminate on June 30, 1974, and that wo should not ac-

cordingly.

Aftor considerable discussion with the

new medical

director,

I boliovn that on were able to convince him that, althOugh tho
discontinuation of this unit is feasible and can be accomplished
readily, a two-year investment giving life to it was worthy of
some discussion. Ho agreed and ousgostod that ho would roviow
the programs in Washington.

like to indicate that we wont through a similar
tho
curtailment of funds in l973. and on wore able

In our discussions some weeks ago, you aokod for any information which might onhanoo out rolationnhipa with the VA.
Thooo ovonts nova been distressing, to any the least, and
while maintononco of this unit for some additional months is
highly likely, I wonder if this capsular history does not reflect
the lack of a significant portnorohip between the VAR and the
Mbdicnl School. If Northport is indeed a Dean's Hospital, should
not the creation or destruction of programs be a matter of con~
corn to the Bonn? In it proper, in your conception, for pro~
grams to be amputated without discussion of their significance
to the touching and research programs, as well as tho treatmont
of patients?

Fortunately, Dr. Yolloo anticipated the sequence of ovonto
and has provided the Department with alternate teaching and
research facilities at another institution. Perhaps you will

understand now why this faculty encouraged this relationship
will continua to do so until hotter faith is shown by the
VAR Northport.
