Maryland Psychiatric Research Center Box 3235 Baltimore, Maryland 21228 Dear Al: I share your concern regarding the reduction in psychi- atric research support, particularly the negative impact which results from concerns regarding the "rights" of patients. I am sure you know of the severe reductions in programs at the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry. The two senior scientists, Turin Itil and George Ulett have left and their work has been severely curtailed. At this Institution, we have been unusually fortunate, for our programs are new and the excitement, enthusiasm and expertise of a new faculty serves to expand our research programs with minimum impediment. we have been called upon to participate more actively in faculty committees, particularly those related to research and teaching, than any of us had been called upon in prior years. we consider participation in the committee systems critical to our salvation. So as to complete the national picture, the reduction in support for psychiatric research apparently includes reduction in industrial support. I have received any inquiry from Milton Kletzkin of Wallace Laboratories seeking advice as to a new position, as the research programs have been severely curtailed. My best regards.
