VWIVw—www—waw" —w-F October 24, 1971 York Law Journal 258 Broadway New York 10007 Dear Mr. Finkelstein, I recall clearly your article in the New York Times total response to the drug abuse epidemic, and am heartened by your announcement today that the New York Law diurnal is planning asspecial issue devoted to the drug problem. calling for a Beginning in 1966, we have been investigating the of using narcotic antagonists in the treatment and the possibility prophylaxis of ipiate dependence. We have been successful in demon~ strating that two antagonists, naloxone and cyclazocine, are effective in blocking opiate use in man; and in beginning the work needed to develop a long-lasting delivery system. There have been many problems in this approach, most noteworthy being the shortage of drugs for testing. In June, 1970, in conjunction with the National Institute of Mental Health, we arranged a meeting of the principal scientists working with these drugs, and the conclusions of that meeting included the recommendation that further study was warranted. A summary of those proceedings is published in Science, 192:1005-1006, 1970. In the past few months, important steps have been taken by researchers to clarify the role of these drugs and to extend the number of institutions capable of testing these compounds. In an issue projected for publication, it would be valuable to have a sober statement of the data available, and the projected uses of these interesting agents. I would suggest that you reach the chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Alfred M. Freedman, should you wish a more sober and optimistic appraisal than that usually emanating from official sources in the nationss capitol. In addition, I would urge you to review the latest information on the limitations of methadone, and the possible advantages of a long acting derivative, l—alpha-acetylmethadol.
