Hey 17, 1971

Dr. Gordon Marjorrison
Department of Psychiatrv

University Hospital
Saskatoon, Canada

Dear Gordon,

I want to thank you for the pre~puhlication copy of your
study "Electrocnnvulsive lherapyt EEG and Clinical Effects."
I found it very interesting.

First, I am enclosing a copy of the proper citation for
the slow wave EEG differences, and suggest that both the text
and the reference list be corrected in galley. Bro. Volevka
and Veldetein have re~anelyzed this data quantitatively, and
the findings stand.
text, it is clear that the REC behavioral
reported were not replicated. But Table II vielde
another fact, that indeed depression scores increased with
increasing delta (9 < .05, r - +.26 w +.29) i“§fiii锧hx1ecv
and excitement decreased. In this correct?
In reading the

I also find the correlations in Table IV confusion. The
negative correlations are consistent with our experience, but the
positive correlation of increased delta voltage and increased
scores in emotional withdrawal and conceptual disorganization
reflects some other process. Are these interpretations correct?

principal difference in our experience is in Table II.
a sun of the observations in schizOphrenic and
depressed patients combined, it may help understand the correlations.
Since the evquotions were done 1 week after a varied number of
trootnento, we voild expect the number of treatments to differ
for the two populations: and the impact on evmptome to differ.
Diagnosis did influence the delta scores on you note on page 5—6,
and perhaps this also influenced the behavioral correlations.

and its relation to behavior. In 1956 and 1961
I believed the slow waves after seizures were an outward index

of the biochemical changes that underly improvement. Our recent
experiences, your report, and the studies by Small, suggest that
the EEG changes, like the memory changes, are non—specific indices
of brain perturbation, and only indirectly related to the behavioral
consequences. Something like the argument about the need for a
successful antipsychotic drug to induce parkinsonism a very
high correlation but surely not a causal or direct relationship.

go on.

Thanks

for the report.

Sincerely yours,
