Dear Costas,

Since we have finally received the agreements that make the
study in Athens feasible, we have examined the protocol and I am
now writing to propose a plan of study. As we reviewed the records
we became impressed with a number of issues: the population sample
and

its characterization,

for each subject of the total

tests

and records to be obtained
sample; the earlier records and their

the data,

and examination for comparisons; the problem of controls;
and
staffing — and all these before the actual detailed
a timetable
examinations of the definitive sample are undertaken. Also there are

availability

administrative problems, as to the funds, our visits to Athens,
housing and subsistence ~ but these will depend on how the project
some

unfolds.

Population sample.

we

are impressed that the description of

the total sample is most important to any conclusions that may be
drawn. we envision a sample of chronic hashish users, some of whom
have records from earlier studies. Since a small sample will be
studied intensively, it is advisable to provide as full a medical,
psychological and social picture of each subject, and of the total
sample from which our test sample is drawn.

view the sample and study in two phases ~ a global overview
and a detailed examination of the snail sample. Is it feasible to
do this sequentially with a few months hiatus or must we complete the
examination of each subject as we get him?
we

provide a basis for the data collection we have made up some
outlines of our suggestions of the data we would like to obtain for
every subject.
With regard to the psychological tests, we have tried to find
tests that have been validated in Greece but have been unable to do
so. Do you have any suggestions?

With regard to the neurological survey, it would be important
that this be a detailed survey. We believe we should make up an
examination outline that would include all the tests indicative of
organic brain disease and of peripheral neuropathy, similar to the
problems one would anticipate in patients with chronic alcoholism.
we are unclear whether the tests used in Athens are derived from the

German/English

literature or the French.

Could you supply us with

outline of the neurological examination in use in your hospital?
Early records. We are aware that Professor Miras has extensive
records of hashish users examined in the past. To what extent will
the present sample be derived from that earlier population? Are we
to make any effort to trace that earlier population, and what study,
an

if

any, should be focussed on

this earlier data?

Controls. The value of our study hinges on the population from
which we select our test subjects and on the adequacy of our controls.
If we so decide, shall we have the Opportunity to use siblings or

relatives of index cases or other as controls?
Timetable and staffing. My schedule is such as to preclude any
activity in Europe until early March. We would like to plan the various
steps of Phase I now, anticipating the period March 15 to May 15, as
the period for the initial sampling. we would use the data of that
sample to plan the second, detailed examinations, looking forward to
doing these studies during the period of June 1 - September 30.

For staffing we would propose that I join you in early March
for such planning as may be required. I will be accompanied by
either Dr. Feldstein or Dr. Dornbush who will provide for the

psychological aspects of the study.
During the

first

phase (interviewing the sample) one of our

staff will participate. we will ask you to provide the remainder
of the staff. Particularly we believe the social worker-administrator
and a

bilingual interviewer should be appointed

population and perhaps
provided by Dr. Miras.

make

the

initial lists

soon to identify the
or surveys from data

We have a special staffing need, that of a cultural anthropologist,
one who knows Greek history and culture, to assist us in characterizing
the sample. It would be ideal to have someone who has been trained in
both countries. We have not been able to find such here, and would ask
that you inquire at the University.
