New York Dear Ben, Al and I met with Alan Miller last Monday, and I believe that a viable relationship between DHH and NUMC is likely. For my part, I look forward to extending our clinical studies and residency training activities to the pOpulstions at Kirby. There are two programs which are of immediate interest. In 1968, I renewed my interest in ECT and we have completed a study of unilateral-bilateral ECT. Electrode placement is significant for memory and EEG changes, but not for clinical behavioral results, suggesting the feasibility of developing an accelerated ECT schedule without memory impairment. It is this possibility we are now investigating, and would like to extend the study to Kirby. I am enclosing a copy of the report and the protocol of the proposed study. we are also interested in continuing our studies of hormonal factors in schizophrenia and, as one study, propose to examine the effects of penicillamine. That proposal is being revised and I will send you a copy when completed. It may not be too soon to review the procedures for experimental studies at Kirby. I have the assurances of Al Freedman, Alan Miller and of Israel Kesselbrenner, but an unclear as to any additional steps which may, at this time, be necessary. Any suggestions?
