Governor Nelson Rockefeller
Albany, New York

September 21, 1970

Dear Governor Rockefeller,

In your campaign for re~election, your opponents are
NACC program as a failure. In one regard, NACC has

criticizing the
shown

responsibility, in supporting studies of opiate antagonists

as an alternative treatment and prevention for opiate dependence.

$7.7».

There is a substantial subcontract for the continuation
of this work before the Commission now, and if approved (as I expect
it will), may represent a legitimate opportunity for your administration
to claim public credit for an important development in addiction
research.
The antagonist studies at this College have been supported
by New York State since 1966. The subcontract is by New York Medical
College with the Food and Drug Research Laboratories of Maspeth,
Long Island. Dr. Alfred M. Freedman, chairman of this Department

of Psychiatry, is the principal investigator of this study. The
contract is now in the Commission offices, before Mr. C. Drysdale.
