I have read of Kales' sleep studies for a few years, but this is my first opportunity to directly compare my techniques with his. Dement has not previously been identified with new drug studies. Both studies suggest that GP 41299 enhances REM activity a finding interpreted by Deuent as almost unique (see pg. 23). Kales failed to elicit effects on REM at 50 or 100 mg doses. Both Denent and Kales, for reasons that are not specified, suggest studies in insomniacs. This recommendation does not seen to be based on the study data, but on information which is not clearly stated. striking, in both studies, is the absence of statistical sophistication in defining the drug induced EEG changes. I was surprised by the small sample size, and the impressionistic nature Most of the summary statements. I cannot determine the relation of this data to the alert but I am most grateful profile of GP 41299 as we defined for the opportunity to examine these studies and to attempt such a correlation.
