Dr. Henry

Brill

Pilgrim State Hospital

Box 22

West Brentwood, New York 11717

Dear Henry,
This week we received a contract to collaborate with Dr. Miran
A1 and I are planning to he in Athens in mid-August
to arrange the details of the study which will be carried out

in Athens.

this fall.

I deeply appreciate your suggesting this study and your
recommendations, which assisted us in the negotiations.
Our studies of cannabis are progressing well. and as soon as
the reports are written, I will send copies to you.

I would also like to tell you of an unfortunate development
in the studies of naloxone. The June 4 nesting on antagonists.
concluded with an optimistic view that antagonists represented a
meaningful approach to opiate treatment. This week we were notified
by Mr. J. Conlon, Vice President of DuPont and the new leader of
Endo Laboratories, that they were notlonger supporting clinical
studies - neither provide naloxone nor allow the use of the IND.
We have asked to buy naloxone for further trials, but Mr. Conlon
has indicated the request cannot be net. They say the basis for
their decision is the expense of naloxone production; the extremely

limited world supply of the precursor, thebaine; and the probability
that when the clinical trials are successful, the demand would
rapidly outstrip the supply.
I have reviewed the c.v. of Dr. Shires Hints and have answered
Dr. Karo directly. Unfortunately, both space and funds are limited
for the coming year, until our new facilities are equipped and
funded. In reading Dr. Miura's history, I note his experience
in animal neurophysiology which may be useful to those investigators
with on-going animal studies as Khaaan, weeks, Vikler and Martin.
we would entertain his visit to our laboratory to become acquainted
with our methods.
