Attention: Mr. Peter Ilchuk Dear Congressman Biaggi: In response to the telephone request of Mr. Ilchuk, I an pleased to enclose a copy of a summary "Narcotic Antagonists in Opiate Dependence”. The meeting was held on June 4, 1970 and was attended by the principal research scientists working in narcotic antagonists. They concluded that continued studies of antagonists are important, particularly as they represent the principal, logical treatment method for opiate dependence. There is need for a more coordinated approach for study. this Should you be interested in additional information, I would suggest that you inquire of Dr. Bertrum Brown, the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, Dr. Peter Grey of the Vera Institute (who has done an intensive study on this problem for Mayor Lindsey in the spring), Dr. Henry Brill, Director of Pilgrim State Hospital (who recommended the support and encouragement which we are now receiving from the New York State Narcotic Addiction Control Commission), Richard Severo or Joseph Lelyveld of the New York Times, both of whom have worked on the problem, or any of the scientists listed as attending the meeting. It may be useful for you, on behalf of the Congress to carry on a more public investigation of this interesting and potentially very useful treatment of opiate dependence.
