We are aware of the public need and demand for care, but we direct action be taken by the Society at this time. recommend no To recommend a single treatment model in a condition as complex as opiate dependence is not satisfactory. The apparent need is for recommendations regarding the applicability of an apprOpriate therapy for each case, i. e. , substitution therapy (methadone, heroin), antagonist therapy (cyclazocine, naloxone), withdrawal and rehabilitation, group therapy, etc. To document such a recommendation is complex and may be undertaken by the Society. However, the issue is of national, not local concern alone, and an APA task force may be a more appropriate body to provide the necessary resolution. The subcommittee, aware of the motivation for Dr. Meier's motion, suggests that the Society review pending Federal legislation (particularly HR 13743 and Senate 3562) to lend support to those aspects or bills that may serve the interests of Dr. Meier's motion.
