Dr. P. Kielholz

Psychiatrische Universitatsklinik Basel
Wilhelm-Klein-Strasse 27
4056 Basel, Switzerland

Dear Dr. Kielholz:
The meetings in Mexico City were excellent, and your
participation was missed. I regret that we could not discuss

the

CINP

program, and

this letter will be

a

start in

our plans.

I would suggest that the CINP program should assess
amphetamine abuse, emphasizing the problems of addiction,
withdrawal, secondary effects (psychosis) and cultural
differences. The use of amphetamine as a model for
psychosis and the relations to schizophrenia are less relevant

as these are not significant public health problems.

I would like to see reports on the following subjects:
1. The sociology and clinical pharmacology of
amphetamine abuse in different countries as Japan, Scandinavia,
U.S. and Western Europe.

2. Mechanisms (biochemical, pharmacological) of
amphetamine "addiction“.
3.

Effects of amphetamines

on

sleep or

clinical behavior (dreaming, hallucinations).

For these topics I would recommend the following

Sleep:

Dr. Vinar has given me the names of authors and the titles
of abstracts spontaneously submitted to the CINP. Except for the

title

"Pharmakotherapie und Sozialaktivitat
Erfahrungen mit Tages Nachtklinik und Patientenklub” by Helmut Rennert, there is no title
that interests me. I have asked Dr. Vinar to obtain an abstract from
Dr. Rennert for us.
—

I would appreciate your suggestions. I believe we should have
four speakers, allowing an introduction and summation by us, and
discussion by the audience. Since funds for participation in the
CINP from the U.S. are non-existent this year, we should make
every effort to invite American scientists to the invited symposia or there will be no U.S. participation.
I have no deadline from Dr. Vinar but
our invitees and alternates by mid-January.

trust

we

can make up

Sincerely yours,
