I have answered your questions and brought the references up~to~dste. Unfortunately, I could not follow your injunction to limit the changes to those of scientific accuracy. I have made many corrections in the text. In some places, your editorial assistants made useful suggestions, and these have been accepted. In others, the corrections clouded my meaning. I have indicated the text which I prefer, and which must be accepted for the contribution to remain in the volume. Despite your plea that the English specialists made corrections which you had to accept, I remind you that the production of an article of this type is the creation of the author; and not a joint endeavor. In the event that you or the editors wish to change s single word or a single frame of punctuation, please accept this note as a withdrawal of the complete article. The suggestions could have been submitted to me before going to galley; and the plea that it is too expensive to make changes new is regrettable but completely yourr responsibility. If you have any other suggestions, please make them in writing before setting them in type. For some years I have found increasing disregard of the idiosyncrscies of authors by the 'so-cslled' specialists asked to review the articles by scientists. If the text is unsceeptsble,then please reject the complete text. But the text is mine; and not that of the Johns Hookins Press. Nor, for that matter, yours as editor. Please honor me by returning a corrected galley proof for my signature. If no galley proof is submitted, I must insist that the article be withdrawn, even if you find the corrections acceptable.
