Nutiey, New Jersey 07110 Dear Dr. Gordon: Mr. Heisman was kind enough to approach us regarding a high dose Librium study. As you may recognize such a study does not stimu1ate much interest in the treating physicians since they have a ready accepted high doses as a standard. As this has been the first study that Hoffmann-La Roche has recommended, I regret that we are unab1e to carry out. it Some years ago I undertook phase 3 and phase 4 clinica1 eva1uation studies at Hi11side Hospita1. Nhi1e in Missouri I found phase 2 and 1ate phase 1 studies of greater interest and deve10ped, in conjunction with my associates. Drs. Iti1 and Shapiro, a method of EEG anaiysis which we fee1 contributes to our understanding of the mode of action and target popuiations for new psychoactive drugs. I am taking the 1iberty of enc1osing a copy of a review of EEG and drug effects which I prepared for the ACNP in 1967. are particuiar1y interested in phase 2 and 1ate phase 1 studies, especia11y those which permit us to utiiize our EEG mode1. The faci1ities for new drug eva1uation in this Department are extensive and inc1ude two EEG 1aboratories and a computer faciiity, a 25 bed in-patient unit for narcotic addicts and psychotic patients, a 1arge menta1 hea1th c1inic servicing a wide variety of popu1ations, and 1ate1y a speciai out-patient unit for chiidren and ldo1escents.
