Dear Ardie,

It

was kind

of you to send

me

the preprint of your

effort in discriminating sleep stages. It represents

latest

much work

to read it. since I have just
revised the paper of our period analytic approach to the same
problem, following some suggestions from the editors of the
EEG Journal.
The revised version is enclosed and represents much
of the data from the Missouri laboratory, exce t that there are
additional tables such as you request spage l6§ describing the
relation of the computer classification to the visual by the
trained observers. This data is being prepared for another
publication. but I am sending your preprint to Dr. Itil with a
request he share the data with you for inclusion in your report.
and I appreciate the opportunity

I am impressed by the portrayal of the power spectral density
approach, especially by the complexity and by the implicit expense.

difficulties

which you describe - difficulties which are described
this approach. and also found by ourselves - are
the lack of discrimination of small differences in this method.

The

by others trying

Perhaps the lack of discrimination is related to the paucity of
samples for study ~ if I understand, you analyzed l8 selected
minutes of an all night sleep recording. This small sample is
related to the cost of power spectrum.

That PNRS shows good discrimination among sleep stages by
the delta band, the unimportance of theta, the significance of
alpha and sigma, and the difficulties of discriminating stage I
from stage I-REH and stgge 3 from stages 2 and 4 are the same
problems we faced in power spectrum. Additional discriminations
are possible in period analysis. for the stage I - stage I-REM
discrimination is now available; the stage 3 discrimination is
feasible following your suggestions (page l8) and some of our own.

approaches.

Perhaps the t1me has come to compare the ava11ab1e methods
for systemat1ca11y co11ected data. As I 1nd1cated ear11er, we
are prepared to ana1yze tapes us1ng the per1od ana1yt1c methods.
We wou1d be spec1a11y 1nterested 1f they are a1so to be ana1yzed
by)our methods. The costs 1n do11ars and t1me are negot1ab1e
and shou1d compare favorab1y w1th the expense and delays wh1ch
you descr1bed for your present systems.
Such ana1yses cou1d be done as part of a demonstrat1on for
an APSS meet1ng and as the bas1s for a d1scuss1on of the ava11ab1e
methods. If th1s is not feas1b1e, we wou1d st111 be w1111ng to
cons1der a demonstrat1on for you at a cost that 15 comparab1e to

that of Astropower.

It was a p1easure to hear your report 1n Wash1ngton, and to
read th1s prepr1nt. Perhaps the enc1osed report W111 perm1t you
to be more opt1m1st1c about th1s rea1—t1me (or 2-4x rea1 t1me)
ana1yt1c system for the re11ab1e and automat1c scor1ng of EEG
sleep stages.
My

best regards.
