Bird Director of Experimental Medicine Sterling-Winthrop Research Institute Rensselaer, New York 12144 Dear Joe, The question of withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation of cyclazocine after extended use was discussed in the reports published in the J.A.M.A. and to appear in the American Journal of Psychiatry. Y3§~fiay recall that a variety of symptoms were recorded by the patients upon acute withdrawal. These included increased irritability, headaches. suspiciousness. depression. a'hrippe-like” syndrome. The sy-ptoms persisted for one to three days and were not serious enough to warrant treatment. and We concluded that in the usual treatment with cyclazocine the termination should be accomplished over a three to five day period, much in the way the termination of imipramine treatment is ordinarily concluded. In those subjects who spontaneously stopped cyclazocine, we have never had a complaint regarding any significant secondary e facts. It has been our impression that the withdrawal symptoms to cyclazocine are of an order of magnitude and most similar to the withdrawal symptoms reported for imipramine.
