‘Dear Dr. Kaelbling:

“VHF...“

has been some months-since we discussed Unilateral ECT
and-during the interim my associates‘and I have reviewed the
literature and decided to undertake a systematic study. Recognizing
that the populations available fer convulsive therapy studies in a
municipal hoSpital are limited; we have been most fortunate in
establishing a geod relationship with the staff at Gracie Square
HoSpitala This hospital is-a erivate facility with a very active
in—patient and euteoetient treatment program. Dr. Lothar Kalinowsky
has agreed to help_us in selecting cases both from his own popula~

course, we reviewed your work carefully and were impressed
with the data presented in your unilateral studies. Gur'present
protocol calls for a comparison of unilateral (non—dominant) seizures
with bilateral seizures given at a customary_rate of three times a

of Paul Blachly.’ For this reason, and with the collaboration
sof'Dr. Kalinowsky, I would like to ask your permission to list
you as a consultant to this project. We have asked Dr. Blachly
and-he had'agreed to assist us. As you can guess, such a study
will be difficult to carry out with proper controls and we would
