Your report on the methadone maintenance program is a commendable
one and will do much to cautious the support necessary for this research
endeavor. The enthusiasm of BrSs‘Dole and Nyswander for their program
is commendable, and your article reflects this very well.‘ Their greatest
contribution may yet he, not in the development of this program alone,

but in providing'atresearch climate‘for the development of other treat~
went methods of narcotic addicts. ,Up until a few years ago, controlled
studies of narcotic eddiCtion were limited by special regulations. The
change in climate, however, has lead to the evaluation of other agents
which might be useful in the treatment of addiction and Imong these are
the narcotic antagonists.

Two such compounds, cyclazocine, produced by Sterling~Winthrop
Laboratories and haloxone,'prodnced by Endo Laboratories. have re~
ceived very limited study. ‘But their initial evaluations demonstrate
these compounds to be safe, easy to use and potent in preventing re“
_

addiction. Like methadone,'however, they will probably be mast useful'
as "engagers" ~ agents that provide the basis for the re~education,
retraining and resocializetion‘of_addictss'
Among the problems in these studies is the high cost of the drhgs
involved. A cost that must be borne_by the pharmaceutical concerns
alone since public funds are not ordinarily available for such research
endeavors. Perhaps. in your later reviews_you will be able to report
on these methods as,ueil; encouraging both the public and scientist
to explore‘other“nays to treat the addicts ways that may have fewerlimitations than.the present methadone maintenance model.

Sincerely yours,
