lbs effects of the active placebo and inactive placebo were
indistinguishable in the later behavioral controlled experiments .
In the experimsnts earlier, when the stimulation was continuous ,
subjects failed to respond and developed drowsiness and in one
instance fell asleep despite the stimlaticn. In the later
exparimants , the periodic stimulation provided better behavioral
control and the EEG variables did not show changes beyond one
standard doviatim from the pre—traatmnt record.
Both the 30 mg am: 60 mg pymvalemne dosages demonstrated
changes in average fmquenoy whim was prominent during the first

In each instance the average fmqumoy appeared to increase so that
the records showed periods with mom than 1 1/2 standard deviations
shift from the pre-tmatmt baseline. The observations were
cleaner for 60 mg than for 30 mg doses.

,

The changes induced by pymvalem were smaller than those
induced by bazbitmmtes on visual analysis, and the variability
appeared to be water in these, two subjects. As a consequence,
we feel the changes in fmquencies ad in average frequency mich
may distinguish pyrovalcmne foam placebo will be observed only
for the group data using the statistical techniques which were
successful in the barbitm'sto study. For this masm, so are pre~

population for malyses. The behavioral cmtrol in such a study
should follow the experiences mien we had in tho latest experimts.

While the 60 mg pymvalerme would probably give a better
discriminatim than placebo, we are preparing trials with the
30 mg dosage form to provide data which is comparable to that of
Dr. Halliday. If this protocol (10-21-65) is satisfactory, we
mold be pleased to undertake the definitive study.
