Dear Dr. Polvan:

Since 'hman's return

we

have had the occasion

to

reflect on my experiences in Istanbul and to discuss the
wonderful possibility for psyduophamacologioal research
at the State Hospital in Istanbul. Since the populations
at the State Hospital may represent a number of patients
who are mtmated by psychotropic drugs, I believe it
represents the opportunity for studies no longer; possible
in the United States. When we spoke to Dr. Bayulkem, I
was impressed that he was anxious to mdertake studies
at his hospital, especially studies that would give him

'

an opportunity to have a large supply of new or established
psychon‘opic drugs-

Also, I was very such impressed with the hospital's
extensive work-therapy pmgrom. With these facts in mind,
I discussed the possibility of a collaborative study pro—
gram with some of the representatives of the Clinical
Canfittee of the National Institutes of Health. My were
interested, emd it is nm up to us to prepare a formal
protocol of a study program. To undertake this, I would
like to recommend a few models that we have discussed here
and obtain your opinion as to whether any are feasible.
If they are, there are ammlber'of facts which we would
like to have so that we can make the necessary applications.
