Dear Mollie:

I was disappointed in Santa Fe that you had not come.
There were a number of questions that I had to discuss with you.
The matings were excellent and Don Walter read your paper very

in the recollection that the changes that you see in the
scalp frequency pattern are very close to those seen with the
administration of imipramine. I am taking the liberty of en—

of frequency spectra.

In studies with Imipranfine there are two additional
observations. Borenstein has déscribeé dysrhytmic patterns in
scalp electrodes and there have been occasional reports of
spikes in patients receiving imipramine. Also adolescent sub=

jects

who

are psychiatrically disturbed have

While you have presented the analysis of the frequency
spectra when the depth electrodes showed spikes, was an evaluation of the frequency spectra carried out to determine if

In additim to the figures which are sufficiently ex—
planatory, I am enclosing a copy of the report in which I give
the statistical data on chronic imipramine admnistretion and
this shows that there was a decrease in the amplitude of alpha
activity, and an increase in delta and beta (22—33 cps). While
this table does not show that the delta and alpha changes are
significant, they become so in the final report which is now in
press.

I am also taking the liberty of enclosing a copy of
the report that I presented in Bimfingham on August 3lst. It
was while writing this paper that it became clear to me that
an important addition to the data available to me would be obtained from studies in patients with depth electrodes. When I
visited the B.R.I. in May, I was escorted by Dr. R. Walter who
showed me a patient in whom EEG's were recorded fmn both the
scalp and the depth during varieties of psychological task performances. You have indicated that infatuation obtained concurrently from the depth and the scalp would be more favorable
than fmn the scalp alone and this latest report supports this.
Would it be possible to visit with you and spend some time ohserving your study prog'emsz I am free to set my own time sch-—
edules and should like an opportunity to explore the possibility
of carrying out some systematic observation of drug administration
in a subject with both depth and scalp electrodes. I do not 1mm
much of the politics of such. an mangement but believe I can
utilize the resources of try Institute to support all necessary
and proper expenses .

It is possible for me to justify a trip to California
to attmd the Fall Joint Computer Conference October 27-29 and
should like to visit with you, if only shortly, either just
before or just after those dates.
I shall send this off today and will call you in the early
of next week in the hope that some arrangements can be made.part
Sincerely yours,

PM,
m
