Dear Dr. Schwars—Pittpar:

thank you very much for your inquiry. The Hissouri Institute of Psychiatry
is the research and training center of the Division of Mental Diseases of
Missouri. It was established in October, 1962, with laboratories and
clinical facilities for research. At the presont time, of 150 beds, we are
utilising 70 for research purposes. Laboratories are established in phsrmn~
cology. psychology. and electroencephalography. as well es a computer
center for both statistical and EEC analyses. There is a specialised
psychiatric research library as u component part of the Institute. Animal
facilities are now being built and will be completed by the end of the year.

present time. there are e number of research programs in progress.
These include Lithium as a therapy for mania; the use of Yohimbine as n
precipitant of satiety and the development of snti~snxicty agents; relation

of EEG patterns and organic factors in the treatment of therapy resistant
psychotics; computer enslysia of the electroencephalogram; the effects of
drug withdrewsl on behavior in the chronically ill; the evaluation of new
psychotropic drugs is part of s national early clinical drug evaluation
program.

In neurophysiology. we have the following major programs: Dr. Turan Itil,
formerly of Erlangen. hes established a program in evalusting the 286
changes with psychotropic drugs and relating those to the behavioral results.
Dr. Takuei lk’uta has established a complete laboratory for the study of the
cortical averaged evoked potential and is now determining the stability of
this method in our pntiouts. my own program is dedicated to determining the
interrelationship between different methods of EEG analysis. and efforts to
quantify these, and to relate these changes to behavioral changes so reflect~
ed in psycholinguistic methods.'

ptaaent, tine, the Institute is planning to expend these prggrsns in
the coming year. us are inviting the collaboration of scientists whose
interests are compatible to our own and who wish an appprtunity such as this
institute provides. and are pleased to consider spplications.
